Guest Post: Alexander McQueen

We have a really great guest post for you, about the legend that is Alexander McQueen.

Alexander McQueen – The Legacy Lives On
By Lyndsey

The fashion world lost an artistic genius this year, when Alexander McQueen committed suicide in his London home. Openly-gay, McQueen was a British designer who took fashion to new, exciting heights. He was known for his unorthodox, flamboyant designs a la Lady Gaga, and inspirational attitude to the fashion world. McQueen was very grounded and uniquely unaffected by the materialistic fashion world, refusing to bow down to the demanding requests of his models. His success has seen him pick up the award for 'British Designer of the Year' on four occasions.

Lee Alexander McQueen was born on the 17th March, 1969 and by the tender age of 27, was already head designer at chic fashion house, Givenchy. He later set up his own labels, Alexander McQueen and McQ. He also designed a collection for sportswear label, Puma. His boutiques can be found in Las Vegas, London, Milan, New York and Los Angeles. McQueen's styles for men are predominantly strong, tailored and cut to perfection. Women's styles are bursting with originality; claw shaped high heel shoes, Japanese garden hats and multi-coloured kaftan's, are to name but a few. He invented the low slung jeans look, and was responsible for some of the most mind blowing creations anyone has ever seen. His incomparable taste is also visible in the range of trainers he produced for Puma.

McQueen's catwalk shows were very much reflective of his clothing style. More like artistic performances, his shows often set out to shock and surprise the audience, sometimes even causing controversy. Speculative masterpieces, ranging from hologram projections, spray painting robots and dance marathons, all compounded to making him an incredible force in the fashion world. He also made headlines in 1999 when he used amputee Aimee Mullins to model one of his collections at his London Show. His styles are often seen showcased at movie premières across the globe, with celebrity followers including Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston, Rhianna, David Bowie and Fergie. McQueen had many celebrity friends, including Elton John and Kate Moss, who also modelled many of his designs on the catwalk. He was also a firm favourite with the girls from Sex and the City, particularly Sarah Jessica Parker who recently wore one of his creations to the London premier of the Sex and the City 2 movie.

No one is entirely sure why such a successful and well-respected person would take his own life, but it is thought that McQueen could not cope with the death of his mother, who lost her battle with cancer nine days before. The Alexander McQueen legacy is set to live on as it was recently announced that his long-term colleague, Sarah Burton will take over as creative director of his empire. Eccentric pop icon, Lady Ga Ga has continued to wear McQueen's most ostentatious designs since he premièred her hit single 'Bad Romance' at one of his shows in Paris, and is certain to continue to wear these provocative designs. Sadly, the fashion world has lost one of the finest designers of our time, but Alexander McQueen has left something special behind; a creativeness and imagination set to inspire many for years to come. His legacy will live on forever.

I honestly didn't know much about Alexander McQueen besides just seeing celebrities wear his clothes. Thank you for sharing this info! Although I knew he took his own life, I hadn't heard his mom had died just 9 days before! How sad!
