More Magic Always

We're having a double whammy this week. The ever so talented Luinae is doing a guest post and a style swap for us. For those of you who don't know, Luinae is the blogger at More Magic Always. She is only 14 and I really wished I could have had her confidence and life knowledge when I was that age.

Style Swap:

1)Where do you live & what do you do?

I live in a small city with a population of 30 000 people that’s just north of Calgary, Alberta. Since I’m only 14, I guess I would have to say I’m a full time student (I’m only in my first year of high school!) But I also run my blog More Magic Always, and I work one day a week at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary as an assistant to a heart surgeon, doing his paperwork, filing things, and putting information into the patient database. I’m hoping to open an etsy shop sometime in the future, but that’s still in the works!

2)Why did you decide to start a blog?

Well, I decided to start blogging because I enjoyed reading so many other people’s blogs (HiFashion, The Glamorous Grad Student, and Academichic, to name a few!) I also started blogging because I felt like I had lots of good ideas about style and beauty that I could share with the world and other people would benefit from. Plus it’s creative, and fun, and I love interacting with all the other bloggers, it really is a community!

3)How would you define your personal style?

Wow, this is a hard question! I guess I would describe my style as vibrant, beautiful, feminine, and polished. I really like to wear skirts and dresses because they make me feel more put together and empowered towards all of the things I do. I’m quite partial to reds, berries, blues, teals, dark greens, greys, and browns and those are the colours that make up most of my wardrobe. You will never ever see me wearing sweatpants and the like to school or work- I take pride in my appearance and the image I present to the world.

4)Whats something unique to you?

I’m pretty much all round unique compared to my high school classmates, but I would have to say that personality wise- I am quite politically and socially active. I enjoy working with my student activist group, volunteering in Calgary at the drop in centre, writing letters to politicians, running campaigns, etc. Appearance wise, I have almost black hair and very pale skin, which is quite a sharp contrast. And it certainly isn’t the norm here, where most people are quite tan and have blond hair.

5)Who is your biggest role model/inspiration?

Honestly, I would have to say my biggest role model/inspiration is blogging. I get tons and tons and tons of inspiration from all of the fantastic blogs and I definitely think all of the empowered and beautiful women you get to read about and have conversations with are worth looking up too. It is a community designed for the purpose to share information and lift each other up- wonderful, no?

8 Ways to Break Yourself Out of a Style Rut

We have all been there, and you know it! This is that time when you stand in front of your closet, full of clothes and accessories and shoes and utter those words- I have nothing to wear. But do you really have nothing good, fitting, or decent to wear? Or is it simply a matter of poor organization and planning, and a need to break yourself out of a style rut? Because trust me, once you know how to get yourself out of a style rut, pulling together great outfits is a cinch.

8. Start Taking Daily Outfit Photos- If you see what you’re wearing on a day to day basis, you can figure out whether your outfits work for you or not. You can also see what the pieces you’re wearing do for your skin, hair, eyes, etc. Additionally, when you have several photos in front of you, it’s easy to visualize new combination!

7. Switch up your Hair or Makeup- Never worn red lipstick? Now is the time to start! Want to get bangs? Consult with a stylist, and then snip, snip, snip! It gives your style a whole new look without even changing your clothes.

6. Enlist the Help of Others- Especially if you have stylish friends or family, it really helps to get a second eye to go through your wardrobe. They can see combinations you never would have thought of, drag out pieces you would never wear, and make sure you don’t wear that purple zippered off the shoulder top.

5. Avoid your Favourite Stores- This may sound counter productive, but hear me out! If you always go into the same sorts of stores, you will buy the same style of things and get bored. So go to different places! If you like to thrift shop, try the high street every once and a while. If you love Topshop, give charity shops a chance.

4. Ignore all of the Fashion Haters- Just because the fashion haters don’t like your pencil skirt, or swing jacket, or converse sneakers, doesn’t make you WRONG. In fact, you are expressing yourself through fashion (woo-hoo) and that’s good. But they’re will always be people who put others down because of their clothing- ignore them.

3. Go Shopping!- If you get some new and exciting clothes, you won’t feel like your current wardrobe is holding you back so much. I have to say, use this tip with caution though- don’t be a shopaholic!

2. Dress Up- Make an effort at least once a week to dress up and put on something very pretty. It will make you feel good and it helps to update your style by pushing your boundaries so you’ll have more ideas. Just try slipping on some high heels, a nice headband, or an adorable skirt. Easy peasy.

1. Read Magazines and Blogs- As if you needed another reason too! But it’s a great way to find new and exciting ways to wear your clothing because magazines have professional stylists. And my reading blogs you get inspiration from all the wonderful people out there (Academichic and Le Blog de Betty anyone?)!

P.S. Our giveaway has ended. We should hopefully be picking out a winner soon.

Ooh, j'adore Luinae's blog! She always posts about such wonderful subjects and brings a bit of magic to everyday! Loving her advice - it's true, frequenting the same stores can be boring at times; it's better to mix it up! :)

"Ignore all the fashion haters" I love that. One year in high school I just stopped playing it safe and started wearing the outfits I would put together in my room but be too afraid to wear to school. I realized when I did that I was completely unique and didn't look like every other girl there so even if someone made a snide comment I felt to good being my individual self to care!

I take outfit pictures daily..glad I'm not alone!

Canada rocks! 14 and a politcial activist? She's destined for greatness : )
