Lifes small lessons and tips

I was interning this last month and I learnt a lot about the real world. I spent my uni years having a blast and just chiling, so living in the real world came as a shock to my system. I've never really had a proper job before (they just offered me a real job), so I've been learning loads. I thought I'd share my experiences and tips about the real world and how to get by in the grown up world:

1)Befriend the people at the local coffee shop, that makes going on the coffee run so much more fun. I love going to the coffee shop and chatting to the waitresses.

(Ok, so my boss isn't as cruel as Meryl Streep in 'The Devil Wears Prada')

2) You can hear a smile over the phone.

3) EAT!! This has been my mistake. I'm eating a little bowl of cereal for breakfast and a small sandwich for lunch: not clever. I have been close to burning out.

4) Money has a value - I've grown up spending a lot of money and just regarding dad's money as unlimited and just there for the taking. I've now learnt that money is not easily earned and so has real value. I've been pretty much burning money my whole life. I now understand the effort that goes into earning money, so I'll think twice about wasting it on things I don't need.

5) Boys aren't that clever. I've been asking the other, very cute, intern to lunch everyday and he always accepts, yet fails to realise my huge crush on him.

6) Looking good and presentable makes a great impression. Ok, so we all know that looks aren't everything, but first impressions do count. If you look presentable, people (especially your bosses) will look at you in a better light.

7) Cliques still exist in the real world! Personally I was shocked to see this in a work environment. People stick to their little gangs and don't let any other outsiders in. Luckily I haven't seen any hard core bitching yet.

8) Take a break from the office. I sit inside, behind a computer all day, so at lunch I always try to go for a walk and get some fresh air. Thats another reason for why I love going on the coffee run. It gives me a chance to stretch my legs.

9) Time management is the most important thing in the world. Seriously, it is. Once you've managed your time well, everything is so much easier.

What are you tips and experiences from the real world?

That's definitely some great advice and congrats on the job! I have the same experiences, although thankfully the whole 'clique' thing isn't really that noticeable in the places I've worked in. My other advice would be to befriend people in the HR, Finance and IT department. They're invaluable and every job I'e worked at, being on good terms with them has proved to be worth it. Also be nice to any secretaries... especially those working for people higher up... they have more power than you think.

And definitely get out of the office as much as you can. Life is too short to be spending it in an enclosed space so many hours a day!

my advice would be to lay off the coffee sometimes and try a healthier drink! coffee can really dehydrate you and you may not realize that you are not drinking enough. <3 u sherin- kt

You're so right about being able to hear a smile on the phone.

I guess my biggest one would be to never lose your temper - it sounds like such a little thing but the person who doesn't lose their temper always, always comes out looking better. There's a proverb about it - 'He who smiles rather than rages is always the stronger'- and if there's a proverb about it well, then, it must be right.

i agree with the eating thing. i did the same while i did my first internship, and it was during the summer so it was so hot & i was running low on energy by the end of the day. lol

This is great Sherin! Well I've been working now for three years and It's exactly how you put it! I specially never speak about my personal problems or issues with no one in the office... they are co-workers... not my best friends and so you avoid a lot of gossip.

congrats on the job darling!
time management is definitely key, as well as taking time to take a a break away from the work and keep personal life and business completely separated.

Thanks for the comment on my anchor necklace! I really liked this post! Once a person has their own job, it's easy to see money shouldn't be taken for granted....it takes time and effort to earn it! Good tip on making friends with the people from the coffee shop!

And guys can be so clueless sometimes! lol

Lovely & adorable tips! (:

I totally agree with boys. They need brains!! They never seem to get obvious hints...

Lol on #5, either that cutie has a gf ,just plain shy or is afraid to ask you out (fear of being rejected). Befriending the waitresses in your fave coffee shop can give you perks,a free cookie for your coffee is one ;). Cliques in the workplace will never disappear and they do nothing but be a bitch to each other. Stay on the neutral ground, that's more safe and you will never learn the value of money until you'll start earning it. :)

These are great tips!! My main tip for life is "Treat others as you would be treated", which I suppose fits with the coffee shop one!!!
